After assembling a personal collection of over 5000 electronic music CDs, I realized that I could only listen to a fraction of my music on a regular basis, so I decided to sell off a large portion of my massive library on eBay. Between 2000 and 2003 I had been buying on eBay under the name "epic-distortion", and I began to sell under that alias as well. There were hundreds of rare and out-of-print titles in my collection, and I quickly realized that there were a lot of dedicated fans of electronic music buying on eBay who were looking for the CDs that I owned. As I posted auction after auction, I found that I enjoyed being able to provide items that were in demand, and I started to seek out rarer and more sought after CDs from all around the world. Perhaps the best part of selling on eBay was the development of relationships with several of my buyers, as well as with a few "rival" sellers, who I would exchange notes with from time to time. It seemed that the more that I sold, and the more that I talked with buyers about my love for electronic music, the more that I wanted to track down new CDs that I could offer.
After a few years of indiscriminately listing one auction page after another on eBay, I wanted to find a better way to organize my auctions, so I started up a new project that I called "Synthetix" in 2003. My aim was to group CDs by genre and post them together so that buyers could more easily locate similarly styled discs containing the type of electronic music that they were into. I established multiple eBay accounts and named them after the genre of electronic music that I would be selling through each, and they had names like "synthetix-idm", "synthetix-chill", "synthetix-techno", etc. This proved to be a more effective way of listing my CD auctions, and both the volume of my business and my stockpile of CDs continued to increase.
By 2004, I was doing so much business through eBay that I couldn't ignore how great the demand was for electronic music CDs, especially vintage CDs that were either somewhat difficult, or extremely difficult, to come by. It was becoming very hard for me to keep up with the rate of transactions (and the cost of eBay fees), not to mention getting items shipped out to customers on time. After straining to keep up with the business, I came to a realization - I needed to have my own website and webstore so that I could have more control over the way I sold my CDs, and that would allow me to better define my business. I didn't quit eBay altogether, instead I merged all of my selling accounts into one account named "synthetixsounds", which was the name I had decided on for my webstore. Rather than continuing to list countless items, my "synthetixsounds" auctions were limited to vintage electronic music CDs, and I focused on rarities that tended to sell for higher prices. After over 1200 positive transactions, "synthetixsounds" was put on hiatus, and I was officially on a break from eBay. I then laid out plans, assembled a very small staff, and began work in early 2005 on what would eventually become SynthetixSounds.com.
There have been many delays over the last couple of years, and it wasn't always easy to devote time to the website in between the full-time hours that I worked at my day job. My website designer and I worked side by side for many months, day and night when the hours were available, and it seemed at times that we may never reach our destination - but the day finally arrived September 14, 2007. Our small but dedicated staff worked tirelessly compiling and organizing thousands of mp3 samples that had to be integrated into the site, scanning over 1300 CDs and hundreds of label logos, and cataloging our sizeable inventory. It goes without saying that we hope you like what we have created, and after you've had time to explore our site and examine the selection that we have to offer, we hope that you will consider us your number one source on the internet for electronic music CDs.
Our goal at SynthetixSounds.com is to offer the best online selection of both new and used electronic music CDs, with an emphasis on obtaining hard-to-find vintage discs. We want to be able to say that no one can match the quality and the quantity of limited production, rare, imported, and out-of-print/deleted discs that we have in stock. We strive to provide a varied selection of the highest caliber new and used electronic music CDs, and we continually work to maintain a large number of older, hard-to-find discs in our inventory. Part of what makes us unique is that in addition to carrying a high percentage of vintage CDs, we also provide a nice selection of newer CDs from some of the best up-and-coming labels, many of which are limited production and in high demand. In an effort to continually showcase a fresh and diverse selection of electronic music CDs, we plan to add both new and old discs to our inventory each and every month representing the full spectrum of electronic music. Our ultimate aim is to bring you CDs that are not available in your local record shops, CDs that are often challenging to find because of their age, because they weren't released domestically, or because of the limited number of copies that were produced and distributed.
Above all, we are huge fans of electronic music here at SynthetixSounds.com, and we hope that our webstore helps to bring exposure to electronic artists and labels who have produced some of the most incredible music, but who are little-known because their tracks can't be heard through commercial channels. We also hope to increase interest in some of the most promising new artists and labels just starting to make a name for themselves in the world of electronic music, and maybe we can create some new fans, or help to cultivate a deeper appreciation in electronic recordings through the CDs that we offer.
As the Synthetixsounds.com website continues to develop, we will constantly be searching out new music that we can bring to you each month in an effort to keep our selection fresh. We plan to maintain a presence in the Discogs and eBay marketplaces where we will offer a supplemental selection of electronic music CDs at a discounted price. Beyond that, we simply intend to focus on growing the inventory in our webstore and to continue to work towards providing the widest selection of new and vintage electronic music CDs that can be found on the Internet.
